Looking for an unique museum to visit? Look no further than the American Sign Museum!

The best part of road trips is discovering all the quirky, unique spots along the way. One such gem in Cincinnati is the American Sign Museum. A tribute to the ever-present business signs, this museum is packed with vintage signs from years gone by, offering a fascinating look at the history of signage.

American Sign Museum: Overview

It’s impossible to miss the museum with all the vibrant signs adorning the outside. There’s a small parking lot on the side of the building near the main entrance, as well as additional spots on the far side. If it happens to be busy, there’s also limited street parking available, and the best part—parking is all free.

The museum is currently over 40,000 sq ft of space with thousands of artifacts on display and even more in a warehouse.

The museum showcases a variety of sign styles and lighting technologies that span over 100 years, with the larger, more impressive signs displayed toward the end of the exhibit.

The museum is open Wednesday-Sunday from 10am-4pm. At the time of this writing, adult tickets are $20 and children 12 & under are free.

What to Expect

I’d recommend setting aside about 1-2 hours to explore the museum. It’s open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm, and they offer guided group tours on Saturdays and Sundays, which are included with your admission and last about 45 minutes.

The Saturday tour gives you a chance to see a neon sign being made at Neonworks, which is connected to the museum, while the Sunday tour offers a deep dive into the history of the signs.

Although the Sunday tours are super informative, I found that they didn’t hold my kid’s attention for the full 45 minutes, and they can get pretty crowded. My suggestion? Take the tour first, then do a second round of the museum to really take in all the signs at your own pace.

In addition to the over 800 signs on display, along with numerous other fascinating artifacts, the museum also offers a private event space that can be rented. If you check out the website, you’ll see that only a portion of the signs are actually on display—the rest are stored in a warehouse.

Hint: If you’re planning to snap some photos, it’s a good idea to time your visit around the tour schedules since the tours can get pretty popular. Also, make sure to check the museum’s camera policy before bringing your camera along. I’ve heard of some people being asked to return their cameras to their car before being allowed inside, so it’s best to be prepared!

American Sign Museum Highlights

Although the museum has many signs, my personal highlights of the museum are as follows

🔷The Tours

I found the tours to be very informative and educational. I will definitely be going back to go through the tour again.

🔷The gold plating section

I love the ornateness of the glass. As explained in the tour, this was a very delicate and time consuming process.

🔷Size of the signs

As you walk through the museum, you will see that the signs will get progressively larger. As you can see from the image below, some of these signs can be quite big.

🔷McDonalds Sign

A popular photo spot is of the giant McDonalds sign.

🔷Back Hallway storefronts

The layout of the back hallway is set up as a bunch of storefronts. Each storefront and windows contain even more artifacts that are worth checking out.
